Most skiers who get cold are not wearing too little. They are wearing the wrong things in the wrong order. A thick cotton hoodie under a heavy jacket feels warm in the car park, soaks up sweat on the first run and turns into a cold, wet towel on the chairlift. The fix is not more clothing. It is a system.
The three-layer system has been the standard in mountain sports for decades because it solves one problem well: keeping you dry from the inside and the outside at the same time. This guide explains what each layer does, how to adapt the system to the day, and the mistakes worth avoiding.

Why staying dry matters more than staying warm
Water conducts heat away from your body roughly 25 times faster than air. That is why a damp shirt at -5°C feels far colder than a dry one at -15°C. Skiing makes this tricky because your effort level swings constantly: you work hard for three minutes on the way down, then sit motionless in the wind for ten minutes on the way up.
Each layer in the system handles one part of that problem. When all three work together, sweat leaves, warmth stays and weather stays out.
Layer 1: the base layer moves moisture

The base layer sits against your skin and has one job: pull sweat off your body and spread it across the fabric so it can evaporate. Warmth is a bonus, not the purpose.
- Fabric: choose synthetic (polyester blends) or merino wool. Both wick moisture and keep insulating when damp. Synthetics dry fastest and cost less; merino resists odour for longer.
- Fit: close to the skin. A loose base layer cannot wick because it is not touching the sweat it is supposed to move.
- Seams: flatlock seams prevent rubbing under backpack straps and bib braces.
- Never cotton. Cotton absorbs up to 27 times its weight in water and holds it against your skin.

Layer 2: the mid layer traps heat

The mid layer is your insulation. It works by holding still air close to the body, and still air is an excellent insulator. The mid layer is also the one you change most often, because it is how you tune the system to the temperature.
- Light fleece: the everyday choice for resort skiing. Breathable, quick-drying and inexpensive.
- Grid or stretch fleece: better for high-effort days, touring and spring skiing.
- Light synthetic or down puffy: for very cold days or for people who run cold. Synthetic fill copes better with moisture.
If your ski jacket is already insulated, you may not need a mid layer at all above -5°C. That is the advantage of an insulated jacket for resort skiing: fewer pieces to think about.
Layer 3: the shell blocks wind and snow
The outer layer keeps the weather out while letting the moisture from the first two layers escape. For skiing, that means a waterproof, windproof jacket and pants with a few ski-specific details: a helmet-compatible hood, a snow skirt, sealed or covered zips and vents you can open on the lift.

What to wear by temperature

Adjust on the go: vent before you sweat

The best layering system still fails if you wait until you are soaked to react. Build these habits:
- Start slightly cool. If you are perfectly warm standing in the lift queue, you will overheat on the first run.
- Open vents early. Underarm and thigh zips dump heat in seconds. Close them again before the chairlift.
- Use your collar and hood. Most heat adjustments can be made at the neck without removing anything.
- Carry, do not wear, the spare layer. A packable mid layer in a small backpack beats wearing it “just in case”.
Five common layering mistakes
- Cotton anywhere in the system. T-shirts, hoodies and cotton socks all hold water.
- Two pairs of socks. They bunch, cut circulation and make feet colder. One thin ski sock is warmer.
- A base layer that is too loose. It cannot wick if it does not touch your skin.
- Too many mid layers. Compressed insulation traps less air. One good fleece beats three thin tops.

After skiing: dry everything, every day

Hang each layer separately overnight, base layer included. Starting the day in slightly damp clothing undoes all the work of the system before you reach the first lift. Wash base layers regularly without fabric softener, which coats the fibres and reduces wicking.
The short version: a snug wicking base layer, one mid layer matched to the temperature, and a waterproof shell with vents. Start cool, vent early, and dry everything overnight.
